A Walk in the Woods

Every time I go hiking in the woods, I realize just how much I don't know. My camera is loaded with pictures of plants I cannot identify. So, maybe you readers out there can help me. I am going to start posting more images of mystery pants and if you know what they are, feel free to share.

Let's start with these two images. They must be fairly common as I have encountered them almost every time I have ventured into the woods. Looking forward to getting to know them! Happy Hunting!

The top photo reminds me of plants from the Saxifragaceae family. That might be where I start to try to identify it. The other photo totally baffles me. I will tell you that it has very rubber-y leaves. They are not necessarily thick but definitely have a hydrophobic feel to them, if that makes any sense.

Dabney,

The first picture is of Galax aphyalla, of the Diapensiaceae family, found in open woods and rocky slopes.

The second plant is Tussilago fargara, also know as Coltsfoot, from the Composite Family. In the spring, a yellow flower, sort of like a dandelion emerges. After the flowers disappear, the leaves start to grow.

Hope this helps.
